New Testament I

The New Testament and Ancient Judaism

The chair focuses on researching the cultural and traditional history of New Testament and early Christian literature within the context of Greek- and Semitic-speaking Judaism during the Second Temple period. In particular, it considers Hebrew and Aramaic texts from the Dead Sea and related writings, especially sources that can be described as “apocalyptic.” Another area of research is the history of the reception and application of some of these writings in later Jewish and Christian traditions. Of special interest is the legacy of Jewish tradition among the abundant but insufficiently analyzed ancient Ethiopian manuscripts. A text edition of 1 Enoch is currently being completed.
