Metal Studies

The Loudest Handbook

Edited by Prof. Dr. Florian Heesch and PD Dr. Anna-Katharina Höpflinger

Metal studies are a broad, dazzling field of different questions and approaches. The planned handbook takes a transdisciplinary look at metal studies, understood as a conceptual approach to metal, and metal as a cultural phenomenon. Starting from a basic praxeological approach, the study of metal is considered as asking questions in a specific cultural context of meaning and action, in short as “doing metal studies”.

The overall concept of the handbook combines diverse questions, of which we highlight seven in particular: tradition, regulation, product, difference, practice, community and performance. The book is structured according to these seven analytical categories and will bring together perspectives from different contexts, disciplines and regions.
